Questions You Should Ask at Your Dental Implant Consultation

Dentist discussing dental implant with patientWhether you’ve lost one tooth, multiple teeth, or all of them, you can benefit from a revolutionary treatment. Dental implants are unlike any other prosthetic because they replicate both the tooth roots and the crowns. They offer unmatched benefits not possible using any other dental prosthetic, but they are a big investment. It’s normal to have some concerns before you’re ready to commit to the procedure. Here are a few questions you should ask during your consultation to ensure dental implants are right for you.

Is My Mouth Healthy?

You must have good oral health to benefit from dental implants. Your dentist will examine your mouth during your consultation to look for anything concerning, like gum disease. It’s not unusual to require a little prep work before dental implants, like tooth extractions or gum disease treatment.

Have I Suffered Bone Loss in My Jaw?

Tooth loss can cause your jawbone to shrink slowly because it’s not being stimulated by tooth roots. Your jaw must have sufficient density to support dental implants. Your dentist will review a CT scan of your oral structures to ensure your jaw is healthy. If you’ve experienced bone loss, they can strengthen your jaw with bone grafting.

How Long Does It Take to Get Dental Implants?

Replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant doesn’t happen overnight. It requires a multi-step treatment process that can take several months to complete. After your mouth has healed from any preparatory procedures, you’re scheduled for your dental implant surgery. Although the procedure only takes a couple of hours and your mouth will be healed in about 2 weeks, it can take several months for your bone to integrate with your post through a process called osseointegration. Once your bone has fused with your post, you’ll begin the final phase of your treatment. Your dentist will attach a customized restoration using an abutment.

Does Getting Dental Implants Hurt?

Sedation or anesthesia will be used to keep you comfortable during your placement surgery. After the effects of any medications wear off, you can expect your mouth to be sore for a few days. You can manage it with an over-the-counter or prescribed pain reliever, applying cold compresses, and following your dentist’s dietary instructions.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants are proven to last for 30 years or more with the correct care, like brushing and flossing. They have over a 95% success rate, so you’ll never have to budget for replacements.

Your dentist will answer all your questions and address your concerns to help you make an educated decision for your smile and quality of life.
